# Attention mechanism

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An attention mechanism is an operation that combines data representations using weights calculated from the relationships between queries, keys, and values. These terms refer to internal vectors, not questions or documents from a search. In self-attention, different positions in the same sequence relate to one another to form their representations. In the [Transformer](/en/resources/glossary/transformer), multiple attention heads perform these operations in parallel.

## Why it matters for marketing

The concept helps interpret claims that the model paid more attention to a particular phrase. This expression does not prove that the information was understood correctly or determined the response. To evaluate content, the team needs to check the result against facts and constraints, without treating a visualization of weights as proof of fidelity or a complete explanation of behavior.

## Practical example

Imagine a summary test involving two subscription plans and a sentence stating that refunds apply only to the annual plan. A demonstration shows high attention on the word “refund,” but the output assigns the benefit to both plans. The analyst records the incorrect association and requests a correction to the summary; the visual highlight does not replace checking the relationship between the benefit and the plan.

## How to apply or verify

Choose texts with verifiable relationships, such as who offers a benefit and under what conditions. Compare these relationships with the output and record errors by case. If you have access to the weights, identify the layer, head, and tokens being visualized. Use this material as a supplementary technical observation: for closed services, do not assume access to the same data or infer weights from the text response.

## Important distinctions

Computational attention is not equivalent to human attention or to a search engine selecting pages. A study by Jain and Wallace showed limitations in using attention weights as explanations for the language tasks studied. This calls for care in interpretation, without proving that every visualization is useless. Nor does it establish a universal position in the text that guarantees a brand will be cited.
