# Applebot

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Applebot is Apple's [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) that collects content used in search experiences, including Spotlight, Siri, and Safari. According to documentation published in September 2026, the data may also support model training and provide up-to-date context for [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response). These uses have distinct controls; identifying the crawler is only the first step in the assessment.

## Why it matters for marketing

For an [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) team, access settings can prevent a public page from being discovered in Apple experiences. There is an operational nuance: when [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt) does not mention Applebot but includes instructions for [Googlebot](/en/resources/glossary/googlebot), Apple follows those instructions. Therefore, a rule created for Google may unintentionally affect Apple's access.

## Example in practice

In a hypothetical example, a restaurant wants to make its menu available to Apple search. The robots.txt file does not mention Applebot and blocks the menu folder for Googlebot. While investigating the lack of access, the team identifies this combination and requests a specific rule for Applebot, consistent with the decision to allow discovery of that public menu.

## How to apply or check

Check the menu host's robots.txt, page directives, and the resources needed for rendering. Validate requests attributed to Applebot using reverse DNS with address confirmation or Apple's official IP list. After making the change, monitor actual access; a simulation using the same header only tests server behavior.

## Important distinctions

Allowing Applebot does not guarantee rankings, citations, or visits. [Applebot-Extended](/en/resources/glossary/applebot-extended) controls the use of data for training; it is not another crawler. For context in AI responses, the documentation provides for [nosnippet](/en/resources/glossary/nosnippet) and the paid-access signal on the page. These controls have different effects from blocking collection and do not prove the retroactive removal of data already used.
