# Alternatives page

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

An alternatives page presents options to replace an identified solution. It starts from a familiar reference and explains which needs other choices can meet. It may cover products, services, or methods. The selection should take into account the reason for switching, essential requirements, and differences that prevent a direct replacement.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this format helps clarify why someone is looking for another solution: a budget constraint, an operational change, or a missing requirement. That guides the selection of options and the explanation of the trade-offs involved. A list of competitors, without a connection to the reason for the search, offers little insight into what the buyer would gain or lose.

## Example in practice

Imagine a café looking for alternatives to disposable cups for dine-in service. A page could present crockery and reusable cups. By examining the routine, the team would find that both options require collection and cleaning, but have different restocking requirements. It would decide to explain these requirements before treating either option as an immediate substitute for disposables.

## How to apply or verify

Start with the task served by the original solution and the reason for replacing it. State the inclusion criteria and assess each option under the same conditions of use. For the café, examine cleaning, storage, and restocking for dine-in service. Record the sources and costs considered. If an alternative depends on an operational change, explain that dependency alongside the recommendation rather than concealing it.

## Important distinctions

An alternatives page starts from a reference solution; a [comparison page](/en/resources/glossary/comparison-page) may start from options that have already been selected. The formats can overlap. Being a competitor is not enough to make something an equivalent substitute. Suitability depends on the context, and an option useful for dine-in service may not work for takeaway. Avoid declaring a universal winner or claiming a replacement comes without trade-offs.
