# AI2Bot

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

AI2Bot is the [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) of Ai2, an [artificial intelligence](/en/resources/glossary/artificial-intelligence) research institute, which explores certain domains to find web content. The official notice states that this material is used to train open language models. The operator publishes the HTTP [User-Agent header](/en/resources/glossary/user-agent) used to retrieve documents and notes that it can be used to filter or reject this traffic.

## Why it matters for marketing

For those who manage content, the question is whether to allow this collection for training and how to monitor access to the archive. Identifying AI2Bot helps avoid classifying the visit as a user query or a search intended to generate a [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation). The open nature of the models does not, by itself, determine whether the collection aligns with the organization’s editorial policy.

## Example in practice

Consider an association that allows AI2Bot to collect its public archive of newsletters. The team finds requests with this token receiving HTTP 403, and a configuration review shows a filter rejecting the header. It asks for the filter to be adjusted for the authorized newsletters and for new requests to be monitored, without presenting the change as confirmed inclusion in training.

## How to apply or verify

The person responsible for the server can compare the logged User-Agent with the string published by Ai2 and review the filter that returned HTTP 403 for the newsletters. A proposed test with this header shows how the server responds, but does not prove the visit’s origin. The official notice reviewed does not provide a list of IP addresses for this confirmation.

## Important distinctions

AI2Bot collects content to train open models; [CCBot](/en/resources/glossary/ccbot) builds an open repository of web data. These purposes are not equivalent. Ai2’s stated purpose does not identify which model will receive each newsletter or guarantee a future citation. The official filtering guidance also does not justify assuming additional [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt) rules; blocking it later does not prove that previously collected material was removed.
