# AI traffic conversion rate

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

The [AI traffic](/en/resources/glossary/ai-referral-traffic) conversion rate measures the share of an identified base of visits or users that completes a defined action. For a session-based rate, the numerator may be sessions with the action, and the denominator, valid sessions from that traffic. The unit and event must accompany the value, since tools and protocols may use different definitions.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, comparing this rate with other channels helps investigate visit quality, provided the action, period, and data collection are compatible. A quote request and a completed purchase do not represent the same outcome. Visitors identified as coming from assistants also do not necessarily include all contacts influenced by AI; interpretation should account for this identification limitation.

## Example in practice

Imagine a school records five sessions with a completed enrollment out of one hundred identified sessions from assistants. Its session-based rate is 5% in this scope. When comparing it with email, the team discovers that the event there counts only a form opening. The team corrects the comparison to completed enrollment in both channels, rather than interpreting different actions as greater commercial efficiency.

## How to apply or verify

Define the event and check whether it represents the intended action, accounting for repeats and failures. Check source rules, rate unit, and analysis window. Compare bases with sufficient samples and declared relevant characteristics. If the denominator is zero, record the rate as unavailable; do not present a null rate as observed performance for a set with no visits.

## Important distinctions

Conversion rate is not equivalent to sales volume, revenue, or the incremental effect of AI. A small base can vary widely with just a few actions, and channels may bring in audiences at different stages. In Analytics, key events and Google Ads conversions have their own uses. The comparison should state its measure, without turning a higher observed rate into universal superiority for assistants.
