# AI Share of Voice

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Share of Voice compares a brand’s presence with that of a group of competitors. In AI, the calculation depends on the unit being counted: mentions, appearances per response, or another stated criterion. There is no universal formula across providers. The denominator and the brands included need to be visible for the number to be interpretable.

## Why it matters for marketing

The measure makes it possible to track the competition for attention across monitored queries. It can show a brand losing relative ground even without losing mentions, if competitors grow more. This behavior is useful for marketing, but requires distinguishing competition in the sample from absolute changes in the brand’s own presence and from changes in the queries used.

## Example in practice

Consider twenty appearances for brand A, thirty for B, and fifty for C. Calculated as appearances divided by the total for all brands, A has a 20% Share of Voice. If brand D enters the comparison with twenty more appearances, A’s share drops to about 16.7%, even though its twenty appearances remain unchanged.

## How to apply or verify

When comparing periods, keep the competitive set and counting rule consistent. Show absolute numbers, platform, and topics, as well as the percentage. Note when a competitor is added or names are corrected. Analysis by intent may reveal that the brand leads on informational queries and is absent from commercial comparisons, something an average can hide.

## Important distinctions

Share of Voice is not market share, sales, total user reach, or the percentage of responses that include the brand. The latter is usually a visibility measure. A response can contain several brands, increasing the competitive total. That is why interpretation starts with the formula shown in the report, not a direct comparison between numbers from different tools.
