# AI response

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An AI response is the output a system presents for a [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) in the context of an interaction. In [AI search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search) analysis, it is important to define the displayed text and the references accompanying it. This unit makes it possible to examine a specific occurrence while preserving the question, collection conditions, and the result’s completion status.

## Why it matters for marketing

A consistent definition prevents reports from counting paragraphs as responses or including interrupted attempts as complete results. Marketing teams need to know which unit underlies a mentions or citations rate. Without this agreement, two providers may use the same term for different datasets, and a comparison may appear to show growth because the count changed between periods.

## Example in practice

Consider an agency testing a question about packaging suppliers and asking a follow-up question about delivery. The conversation contains two responses, each with its own references. To measure presence in the initial question, the agency keeps only the first response in the corresponding dataset; the second goes into a separate segment rather than duplicating the first response’s citations.

## How to apply or verify

Define where the response begins and ends on the observed surface. Record the question, date, platform, prior context, and a capture of the complete result, including accessible references. Separate failures and interruptions from valid results. In the OpenAI API, a search may produce tool and message items; intermediate operations should not automatically be counted as responses shown to the reader.

## Important distinctions

A response is not a source: it may present information from several pages, with or without visible references. Nor is it equivalent to an entire session or conversation. A new generation for the same question is another observation, even when it repeats the previous text. The technical object called Response in an API may include elements beyond the text being analyzed.
