# AI referral traffic

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

AI referral traffic is the set of website visits that measurement can associate with links from assistants or AI experiences. Identification may use referral sources, URL parameters, and classification rules. The data depends on how browsing and the analytics tool preserve this information; it does not automatically include every visit influenced by AI.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this view connects part of the discovery process to activity on the site. It lets you investigate which pages receive visits and whether those visits lead to relevant actions. It complements [mention and citation](/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-a-mention-recommendation-and-citation-in-ai) metrics: a source shown frequently may generate few clicks, while a page with fewer references may meet a more specific commercial need.

## Practical example

Someone opens a documentation link in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response), and the visit appears with the assistant’s domain as the source. Another person copies the address and opens it later, without the referral being preserved. Both arrived after consulting AI, but only the first may be directly recognized in measurement. Therefore, observed figures do not necessarily represent the entire channel.

## How to apply or verify

Check the source and medium, campaign parameters, landing page, and conversion events. Review classification rules and referral exclusions before grouping domains. Test a real browsing session to see how it appears in your configured environment. Compare periods using the same method, and keep visits, sessions, and users as distinct units in your report.

## Important distinctions

Referral traffic does not measure how many times a brand appeared in responses or how many people read a [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation). It should also not be confused with AI crawlers in server logs: automated access and human visits have different purposes. Commercial attribution requires more context and cannot be resolved solely by identifying a source domain.
