# AI Mode

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

AI Mode is a Google Search experience where users search with AI-generated answers and can explore further by asking follow-up questions. It combines generation and [information retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) to address needs that may involve multiple criteria. You should not assume that its answers, sources, and interface are the same as those of an AI Overview in traditional search.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the interest lies in how a brand takes part in a more detailed exploration. A user may start with a category, add a constraint, and then compare options. The relevant information changes throughout the conversation. Documenting the offer’s criteria and limitations can be useful at stages that generic corporate copy cannot address.

## Example in practice

Someone searches for ways to organize a content team’s work and then asks for alternatives for a Brazilian agency. The follow-up may require sources on collaboration, languages, and customer service. A company included in the initial answer may not appear in the next one if its offering is unsuitable or its information does not address the new criteria.

## How to apply or verify

When analyzing, preserve the initial question and follow-ups, since the history changes the context. Record the environment and check which pages appear as supporting sources. Report AI Mode data separately from [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) data. To prepare your site, work on accessibility, reliable content, and clear structure, following the official guidance for Google Search’s generative experiences.

## Important distinctions

AI Mode is not a universal new name for AI-powered search, and its results do not represent all platforms. [Query fan-out](/en/resources/glossary/query-fan-out) explains one part of the search mechanism, but you cannot reconstruct everything that was consulted just by reading the answer. Monitoring should distinguish what the interface shows from what the team infers about the process.
