# AI assistant

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An AI assistant is the product a person interacts with to get help from an [artificial intelligence](/en/resources/glossary/artificial-intelligence) system. It combines an interface, models, and available functions to answer questions or support tasks. This glossary focuses on assistants based on language models. The [Gemini](/en/resources/glossary/gemini) app, for example, offers conversations, drafting, and summaries.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, identifying the assistant helps avoid attributing everything a buyer sees to the model alone. The experience may include search, files, history, and information from connected apps. These features change the conditions of the response. A brand presence assessment needs to record the product and surface used, as well as the model name when available.

## Example in practice

Imagine an analyst asks Gemini to summarize an attached sales presentation. The response correctly describes an integration because it appears in the file. Another person asks the same question without attaching the material and receives an incomplete description. The analyst decides to separate tests using supplied documents from public discovery tests, preserving the context of each result.

## How to apply or verify

When choosing or evaluating an assistant, check what inputs it accepts, whether search was used, and which sources or files support the output. Examine the enabled functions and permissions for connected apps. Use a representative task with material approved for sharing and review the result. Google documentation states that features vary by account, device, and authentication.

## Important distinctions

Assistant, model, and [AI agent](/en/resources/glossary/ai-agent) do not refer to the same thing. The model handles processing; the assistant organizes the experience; an agent may execute steps with tools toward a goal. Not every assistant performs external actions. Using a file in a conversation also does not prove that its contents became publicly accessible or were incorporated into training.
