# AI answer source

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An AI answer source is a document, page, or other material retrieved by a system to formulate its response. This material may appear as a visible reference or remain only in search logs. In the OpenAI API, the list of sources consulted may be longer than the list of URLs cited in the final text.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this distinction helps avoid concluding that a page was excluded from the research because it did not receive a link in the response. It also prevents treating every external document consulted as confirmation of what was written. Before choosing an action, the team needs to know whether it is evaluating [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval), public visibility of the reference, or the accuracy of a claim.

## Example in practice

Suppose an agency tests a search-connected assistant to compare recyclable packaging. The log shows a technical data sheet among the sources consulted, but the response cites only a news article. The agency classifies the data sheet as retrieved without a visible [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) and checks whether its recycling conditions were preserved before proposing changes.

## How to apply or verify

When you have access to the integration, check the URLs logged by the search tool and compare them with the response references. In the Responses API, the documentation lets you request the list of sources for the call. Save the question, date, and full output. Without these records, describe only the sources shown; do not reconstruct hidden searches based on textual similarity.

## Important distinctions

A retrieved source, a cited source, and a source that supports a claim are different things. Consulting a document does not prove that it determined the response, and displaying a link does not validate every sentence. A tool's list also does not reveal the model's [training data](/en/resources/glossary/training-data) or show that a person opened the page.
