# Agentic Commerce Protocol

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Agentic Commerce Protocol, or ACP, is an open specification maintained by OpenAI and Stripe for commercial exchanges between buyers, agents, and sellers. The documentation describes creating, updating, and completing checkout, with information about items, totals, and payment. As of October 2026, the repository remains in beta status and lists the published version as 2026-04-17.

## Why it matters for marketing

For commerce and marketing teams, the protocol helps distinguish a transactional integration from presenting products in an assistant. OpenAI’s documentation guides the submission of structured feeds and limits this onboarding to approved partners. Checkout, in turn, depends on operations implemented by the seller. Preparing catalog data does not prove that buyers can complete orders.

## Example in practice

Imagine a store evaluating ACP to sell a backpack through a compatible agent. After updating the address in the checkout session, the response still shows the previous shipping cost. The team would pause completion of that session and request a correction to the calculation for the backpack, since the displayed total needs to reflect the delivery option selected by the buyer.

## How to apply or verify

Check the contracted version, schemas, and states returned when creating and updating a session. Compare items, availability, delivery, and total before confirmation. To complete checkout, the integration owner should verify how credentials are handled and review the payment and order response. Keep this evidence separate from the feed acceptance record.

## Important distinctions

ACP is not a payment processor, nor does it turn product discovery into authorization to charge. The seller retains its commercial responsibilities and payment processing infrastructure. Implementing the specification also does not guarantee automatic listing on an AI platform: each platform defines participation. Availability by country and commercial integration require separate confirmation.
