# Agent Skills

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Agent Skills are reusable sets of instructions and resources that guide specific tasks. In the open Agent Skills format, a skill is a folder containing the SKILL.md file, which includes a name, description, and instructions. It can include scripts, references, and document templates. The format organizes procedural knowledge for compatible agents, without defining all available tools by itself.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing teams, skills make it possible to document recurring procedures, such as preparing a report using an approved structure. The benefit depends on clear instructions, up-to-date references, and sufficient inputs. Whoever commissions the automation should be able to identify the procedure loaded and check the output, rather than interpreting the existence of the skill as proof of the agent’s competence.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency with a skill for media reports that requires a reporting period, spend, and confirmed conversions. When it receives a file without a spend column, the agent consults the instructions and identifies the missing input. The team provides the complete file before reviewing the report, avoiding an efficiency calculation based on information required by the procedure.

## How to apply or verify

Read SKILL.md and the resources it references, check the usage description, and verify the environment’s dependencies. In a controlled task, observe whether the agent loads the appropriate skill, follows its conditions, and produces the expected output. Review scripts before running them, and keep access and approval limits clear for actions that change external systems.

## Important distinctions

A skill in this context does not mean a human ability or a separately trained model. The format calls for loading metadata first and instructions when needed; additional resources are included as the task requires. The documentation also marks allowed-tools as experimental, with varying support. Declaring a tool in a file does not replace the environment’s permissions or guarantee that execution will take place or be correct.
