# AEO

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

AEO stands for [Answer Engine](/en/resources/glossary/answer-engine) Optimization. The term describes the work of improving the visibility and quality of information that appears when a system answers a question directly. In current marketing usage, it usually refers to answers from assistants and AI-powered search experiences.

## Why it matters for marketing

Its value for marketing lies in understanding the question that comes before a choice. An answer may compare options, explain limitations, or suggest a provider before the user visits any website. Clearly defining the problem helps the team produce information that genuinely supports decision-making, rather than chasing mentions without commercial context.

## Example in practice

Consider the question “which tool lets an agency monitor brands in AI?”. A useful answer needs to address accounts, work organization, coverage, and limitations. Text that repeats “the best tool” offers little evidence for these criteria. A page with scope, examples, and [terms of use](/en/terms) contributes more to an informed evaluation.

## How to apply or verify

Map questions from sales, support, and research. Compare what the audience needs to know with what has been published. Review definitions, comparisons, and product documentation; identify who is responsible for each piece of information. When measuring, record the question, platform, location, date, and sources. This helps the team distinguish a recurring absence from an occasional case.

## Important distinctions

AEO is not a text format, a mandatory collection of FAQs, or a certification granted by AI platforms. Historically, the term has also been associated with direct answers and voice assistants. Since the boundary with [GEO](/en/resources/glossary/geo) is not standardized, explain the scope of the work before hiring or comparing services under these acronyms.
