# Accessible, selected, and extractable

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Accessible, selected, and extractable is an editorial operating model for organizing questions about a page in AI-powered search systems. Accessible concerns whether the relevant client can retrieve the content; selected concerns selection for a task; extractable concerns extracting a usable excerpt. The triad separates conditions for analysis without describing a universal architecture.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this model helps route problems to the appropriate team. An access restriction calls for technical investigation; an ambiguous excerpt calls for content review. However, the absence of a source from an answer does not by itself identify a selection failure. Available evidence needs to be classified before deciding on blocks, editorial revisions, or further research.

## Example in practice

Imagine a company that publishes installation instructions for a filter. The client used in the audit receives the page and correctly extracts the procedure, but an observed answer cites another manual. The team records that access and extraction were verified in that test. It treats internal selection as unknown and examines whether the answer refers to the same filter model.

## How to apply or verify

Record the access status, received content, and extracted excerpt for the same URL and conditions. Then record the query, service, date, and sources visible in the answer. A public [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) lets you observe one reference, but not all the content considered. Separate this evidence from hypotheses about relevance, and avoid treating a bot visit as proof of selection.

## Important distinctions

The three labels do not form a mandatory funnel for all search engines. In Google, supporting links in [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) require an indexed page that is eligible for a snippet, with no additional technical requirements; eligibility does not guarantee appearance. Conditions may differ in other systems. Even with adequate access and extraction, selection and faithfulness of use remain separate questions.
