GEO and AEO Guide

## GEO and AEO Guide for Brands and Marketing Teams

GEO and AEO bring together practices for understanding and improving a brand’s presence in AI responses. Learn how this work connects to SEO, content, and reputation, and how to choose your first steps.

- [Read the guide](<https://tropk.ai/en/resources/geo-and-aeo-guide#conceitos>)
- [Generate a free report](<https://tropk.ai/en/free-report>)

## Key points

- Distinguish between a brand mention, a source citation, and a recommendation for a buying situation.
- Check public access, indexing, links, and information before expanding content production.
- Choose whether to update, consolidate, or create pages based on the buyer’s question and the gap found.
- Write clear answers with authorship, usage conditions, examples, and verifiable evidence.
- Separate delivery validation, monitoring AI answers, and business results.

Concepts

## What are GEO and AEO?

Both acronyms describe efforts to help information about a brand be found and presented in responses. The work combines technical accessibility, useful content, verifiable facts, and monitoring what systems show.

[**AEO**](/en/resources/glossary/aeo) stands for [Answer Engine](/en/resources/glossary/answer-engine) Optimization. The term is used for practices aimed at direct answers, including search experiences and [AI assistants](/en/resources/glossary/ai-assistant). [**GEO**](/en/resources/glossary/geo) stands for [Generative Engine](/en/resources/glossary/generative-engine) Optimization: it focuses on responses produced by AI systems that synthesize information.

The definitions overlap and vary among providers. In this guide, we use GEO and AEO to discuss how brands are discovered through AI: when someone uses a response to understand a topic, compare options, or decide what to investigate.

### SEO, AEO, and GEO as part of the same work

[SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) brings together practices that help search engines find and understand pages and make them useful to people searching. GEO and AEO broaden the focus to the response: Does the brand appear? How is it described? Which pages are cited? Does the information meet the person’s needs?

A page can receive a link without the brand being recommended. The brand can appear in the text without a link to its website. So it is useful to distinguish three events:

- **Mention:** the brand name appears in the response.
- [**Citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation):** the response provides an identified reference or link.
- **Recommendation:** the brand is suggested as an option for the situation described.

These experiences also overlap. [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) are part of Google Search; building a presence in them involves SEO fundamentals. According to [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), there are no additional technical requirements for a page to appear in these experiences.

AI-powered search

## How a response finds information about brands

A response that uses search can bring together information from a company’s website and third-party pages. What appears depends on the question, the tool, and the sources available for that query.

Not every response searches the web. Systems may respond using knowledge learned during training or use tools to retrieve information. Updating a page publishes a new source; it does not immediately change a model’s learned knowledge.

In AI-powered search, a question may be broken down into related queries. Google describes this process as [**query fan-out**](/en/resources/glossary/query-fan-out): AI Overviews and AI Mode may search subtopics and different sources to compose a response. The two experiences may use different models and techniques and show different links. This process is [documented for Google Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features#how-ai-features-work); it does not describe the internal process of all assistants.

### What this changes for marketing

A question like “Which CRM works for an accounting firm that needs to import its client database?” involves more than a category. The person needs to compare fit, importing, service organization, and adoption effort. Useful information may be on a product page, in import documentation, and in an independent review.

Reading cited sources helps identify available information and possible gaps. Check the relevant passage on each page: does it support the response’s claim? Is it up to date? Does it cover the same product and country? A visible citation is a lead for investigation, not an inventory of everything the system consulted.

Before creating new content, find out what information the buyer is missing and where it should already be available. This question connects reviewing responses to marketing work.

Audit

## Check accessibility, SEO, and content before expanding production

Start the audit with pages that are important to the business. Check whether they can be accessed, whether the main information is available, and whether they answer the questions behind the search.

### Accessibility and indexing

Choose product, category, service, and help pages that need to be found. Open each one, check the content delivered, and verify the following with the technical team:

- Whether the URL works publicly and does not require a login to show the main information.
- Whether [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt), hosting rules, or the CDN block the [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) relevant to that experience.
- Whether the page has a [noindex](/en/resources/glossary/noindex) tag or snippet restrictions applied by mistake.
- Whether [internal links](/en/resources/glossary/internal-links) lead to the correct page and duplicate versions have a coherent [canonical](/en/resources/glossary/canonical) setting.
- Whether relevant text is accessible, including when part of the interface depends on JavaScript.

To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. Use [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console)’s URL Inspection tool to investigate what Google received. The [AI features documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features#technical-requirements-for-appearing-in-ai-features) also recommends making important text available, using internal links, and providing a good page experience.

In [ChatGPT](/en/resources/glossary/chatgpt), OpenAI distinguishes [**OAI-SearchBot**](/en/resources/glossary/oai-searchbot), used for search, from [**GPTBot**](/en/resources/glossary/gptbot), associated with content that may be used for training. The settings are independent. The decision to allow search and the decision about training need to be evaluated separately, according to the [crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots).

### Quality and trust

After checking access, read the page as a buyer. Does it explain what the offering does, who it is for, and what conditions affect its use? Can the team support its claims with documentation, demonstrations, experience, or its own data?

[E-E-A-T](/en/resources/glossary/e-e-a-t) brings together experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Google uses this concept to guide quality evaluation and explains that E-E-A-T is not, by itself, a specific ranking factor. It helps you ask better questions about content; it is not a universal AI trust score. See the [guidance on helpful content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content#eat).

In practice, identify real contributors, cite the sources for important claims, explain how a study or test was conducted, and correct outdated facts. The authorship and evidence presented need to reflect who produced the content and the work that was done.

Strategy

## Define what the buyer needs to know

Strategy becomes clearer when the team connects the actual offering to buying situations. This makes it possible to choose topics and assess whether the brand is described accurately and usefully in responses.

Gather what marketing, product, sales, and support already know: recurring questions, reasons for choosing, objections, features, commercial terms, and restrictions. Use Search Console queries as evidence of searches on Google. They help investigate intent, but do not measure how often a question is asked on ChatGPT.

### A simple decision brief

- **Situation:** what is the person trying to solve?
- **Criteria:** which features affect their choice?
- **Offering facts:** what can the company claim and demonstrate today?
- **Public information:** on which page are these facts explained?
- **Gap:** what remains unanswered or has conflicting information?

In the accounting firm example, “complete and intuitive CRM” does not explain how to import clients, organize service, or check the imported data. Documentation covering accepted formats, required fields, and error handling addresses a specific need.

Language and market are part of that need. For an offering in Brazil, check the currency, availability, support, terms customers use, and relevant local requirements. A literal translation of a foreign guide may leave these conditions unanswered.

Choose questions to investigate category discovery and questions to verify brand facts. Both tasks are useful, but they measure different things: naming the company in the question itself already directs the topic toward it.

Decision

## Choose whether to update, consolidate, or create

Not appearing in [AI responses](</en/resources/glossary/ai-response>) is a reason to investigate. The next step depends on what you find in the pages, sources, and buyer’s needs.

### Update an existing page

Prefer an update when the URL already meets the intent but omits information, describes an older version, or hides an important answer. Preserve what is still useful and add the missing evidence. Changing only the date does not make content more current.

### Consolidate scattered information

Consider consolidating when several pages answer the same question partially or inconsistently. Choose the page that should bring the answer together, review navigation, and plan how to handle the other URLs. Similar titles alone do not prove that pages are competing with each other.

### Create a new page

Create one when there is a distinct task, a useful answer the team can support, and no current content that meets the need well. Import documentation may warrant its own page; small variations of the same question may fit in a single explanation.

### Correct information outside your website

If the incorrect fact is on an external source, publish the correct information on your website and consider asking the source to correct it. A new blog page does not, by itself, fix an outdated description in a partner directory.

Fictional example

## An example: from question to action

Consider a fictional CRM company that serves accounting firms. The goal is to explain how to import a client database for teams evaluating a tool change. The example shows how to connect a question to a verifiable action.

### 1. The buyer’s question

“Can I bring my clients over from my current system and check what was imported?” The question involves data compatibility and operational security, as well as knowing the brand.

### 2. What the team found

The product page says “import your clients” but does not explain the accepted format or how to check for errors. The help page has instructions for an older version. A partner directory still describes the company only as a contact management tool.

### 3. What’s worth doing

Product and support validate the current procedure. The team updates the documentation with accepted formats, required fields, limitations, and an example without personal data. The product page summarizes the capability and links to the documentation. The partnerships lead requests a factual review of the external description.

### 4. How to check the work

First, test the instructions: can someone prepare the file, identify errors, and verify the import? Also check the links and access to the published page. Then monitor answers about this task and record whether they start providing the correct information and which sources they cite.

The update improves the information available to buyers. A later change in answers may inform the next task, but on its own it does not prove that the update caused the change.

Content

## Write clear answers backed by evidence

Organize each page around the task it serves. Give the main answer early, then explain the conditions, examples, and evidence needed to use it.

### Be precise about what the offering does

Compare “easy integration with any system” with “imports CSV files with name, email, and company fields; files missing required fields are returned for correction.” The second phrasing helps buyers assess the capability. Use it only when it matches the validated functionality.

Explain necessary terms, keep product names and versions consistent, and use [headings](/en/resources/glossary/headings-html-section-titles) that make the subject clear. Lists work for conditions or steps; tables help when comparing equivalent criteria. Choose a format that aids reading; there is no required number of words or questions.

### Show where the claim comes from

Documentation, demonstrations, and proprietary data can support an explanation. For research, state who participated, the period, country, and method. For comparisons, use the same criteria for each option and indicate the date of consultation. For hypothetical examples, explain what they illustrate.

If you use [structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data), check that it describes content people can see. Product, article, or organization markup should match the page. Google does not require special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode; its [official guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features#seo-best-practices) is to keep markup consistent with the visible text.

An FAQ can address questions that remain unanswered. It does not need to be added to every page to make it eligible for Google’s AI experiences.

Communications and reputation

## Manage information on external sources

Search-based answers may show sources the brand does not control. Review which ones appear for relevant questions before deciding where to focus communications and reputation work.

A partner directory may describe an integration; a review may compare features; a testimonial may record a support experience. These documents serve different purposes. Read each one and check what it supports about the company.

### Start with verifiable information

- Review profiles and descriptions the company maintains on platforms relevant to its audience.
- Check information on partner pages and request factual corrections with supporting documentation.
- Give journalists and experts information and studies they can verify.
- Encourage genuine reviews and respond to real questions in communities where the team participates.

A criticism may point to a product or support problem. In that case, the work involves improving the experience and communicating what changed. Repeating a favorable description in multiple places does not replace independent evidence or guarantee a recommendation.

Execution and monitoring

## Prioritize, execute, and monitor what changed

Choose the first task based on the importance of the question, evidence of the problem, and feasibility of fixing it. Incorrect information on a key page may deserve attention before a new article on a broad topic.

### Set an actionable priority

Record the buyer’s question, the affected page or source, the observed problem, the chosen action, and who can carry it out. Add the missing evidence and how to verify completion. In the CRM example, validating the import instructions comes before rewriting the sales page.

Assign work according to existing responsibilities: the technical team checks access; [content and SEO](/en/solutions/content-and-seo-teams) handle the page and navigation; product validates capabilities; communications and partnerships address external sources. Marketing coordination connects these tasks to the buyer’s decision.

### Separate three types of monitoring

- **Delivery:** Was the change published, does it work, and is it correct? This includes version, links, access, and testing the information.
- **Answers:** Does the brand appear, are the facts correct, and have sources changed in the monitored questions? Compare periods using documented questions, tools, language, and collection conditions.
- **Business:** Were there identified visits, qualified leads, or purchases? Use analytics and business information to investigate their relationship to the work performed.

In Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode data are included in the Search Console performance report under the Web search type. This general report is not a separate dashboard for presence in these experiences. See Google’s [documented scope](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features#performance).

A mention rate describes the set of answers observed. It does not automatically represent the brand’s share across all conversations in the market. Bot visits, mentions, and citations are not conversions either. Use each signal to answer the question it can clarify.

Keep a record of changes. If information is still incorrect, revisit the page and sources; if it is clear to buyers, preserve the improvement and assess the next gap. Monitoring informs new priorities.

First task

## Where to start

Choose an important buying situation and conduct a thorough initial review. By the end, you should have a justified action, an owner, and a way to check the change.

- Describe the buyer’s task and the offering facts that matter to it.
- Read the current page and the sources cited in the answers you reviewed.
- Check access, relevant [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing), clarity, and whether the information is up to date.
- Choose whether to keep, fix, update, consolidate, or create.
- Gather the necessary evidence, make the change, and test the published information.
- Record the version and monitor new answers and business signals, noting their respective limitations.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do GEO and AEO replace SEO in a marketing strategy?

GEO and AEO complement SEO in a marketing strategy. SEO helps search engines find and understand pages; GEO and AEO add monitoring of how the brand and its sources appear in answers. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google retains the fundamentals of SEO and requires no additional technical requirements.

### Do you need to allow AI training to appear in ChatGPT search?

OpenAI documents separate controls for search and training. OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search; GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models. A website can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot. Allowing the search crawler makes access possible, but does not guarantee selection or citation in an answer.

### Is there a required file or schema to appear in AI answers?

There is no universal file or schema requirement for all AI engines. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, with no additional technical requirement or special schema. Structured data should match the page’s visible content.

### How long does it take for a website change to appear in AI answers?

There is no general timeframe for a website change to appear in AI answers. Publication, access, recrawling, and source selection are separate steps. First validate the published version, links, and information; then observe comparable answers over time. Updating a page does not immediately change knowledge learned during a model’s training.

### How do you decide whether to update a page or create new content for GEO and AEO?

Update a page when its URL already serves the buyer’s intent but omits a fact or contains outdated information. Consider consolidating pages when explanations are scattered or contradictory. Create new content when there is a distinct task, useful information the company can support, and no existing page adequately meets the need.

### How do you measure results from a GEO and AEO strategy?

Separate three types of monitoring in a GEO and AEO strategy: published work that functions, mentions and sources in observed answers, and business results such as visits and qualified leads. Compare answers using documented questions, language, tools, and collection conditions. A mention rate represents the observed sample, not all conversations in the market.
