AI-powered search can present an answer before a click and mention brands that users might not find in a traditional list of results. CTR and [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) studies help track this shift, but the presence of AI Overviews and its impact vary by country, category, and query set. For a business, the practical question is whether its brand appears in answers relevant to its buyers.

There is a metric for measuring this presence, or its absence. It is called [Visibility Score](/en/resources/glossary/visibility-score) in AI, or [AI Visibility](/en/resources/glossary/ai-visibility) Score. It differs from the classic [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) Visibility Score that SEO tools have measured for decades. It measures something else, in a different place.

This article explains what it is, how the formula works, what its components are, why the score varies between [ChatGPT](/en/resources/glossary/chatgpt), [Perplexity](/en/resources/glossary/perplexity), and [Google AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews), and how to measure your brand’s score, with or without a tool.

## Key points

- Visibility Score has no universal formula: document whether the metric is a presence rate or a vendor's composite score.
- The basic rate is the number of responses with at least one brand mention divided by the total number of responses analyzed, multiplied by 100.
- A mention, a recommendation, and a URL citation are different events; Citation Rate should track identifiable references to the site.
- Compare brands using the same questions and conditions, separating platforms and open-ended prompts from questions that already include brand names.
- Correlation with videos, reviews, or backlinks does not prove causation; track trends and check responses before attributing gains to an action.

## What Is Visibility Score in AI Responses

### The definition

**Visibility Score** (also called AI Visibility Score or Brand Visibility Score) is a composite metric that measures how often and prominently a brand appears in responses generated by conversational AI, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, [Gemini](/en/resources/glossary/gemini), and Google AI Overviews.

The difference from traditional SEO is structural. Google rankings measure position in search results, lists of links that users decide whether or not to click. Visibility Score in AI measures whether the brand appears within synthesized responses—texts that AI generates as if they were the definitive answer to the user’s question.

The scale varies by tool: some use 0 to 10 (AI Labs), others use 0 to 100 (Knowmad, DND SEO Services, Surfer), and others report a direct percentage. [Hedgehog Digital Brasil](https://br.hedgehogdigital.co.uk/blog/presenca-marca-ias/) uses the percentage format, which is the most intuitive and the one we’ll use here.

### The specific formula

There is no universal Visibility Score formula: each tool can use different rules. In this article, the basic measure is the share of responses with at least one mention of the brand:

> **Visibility Score = (responses that mentioned your brand ÷ total responses analyzed) × 100**

Here’s an example: you analyze 100 ChatGPT responses to questions relevant to your business. Your brand appears in 32 responses. The [presence rate](/en/resources/glossary/ai-presence-rate) is 32%.

The structure is simple. Comparisons depend on relevant questions, documented collection conditions, and time periods. [Tropk.ai](/en) supports the analysis of questions, responses, and sources, as well as content audits, to help interpret brand presence.

Some tools add position, mention type, sentiment, or topic coverage to build their own scores. Document the methodology before comparing numbers: a 32% presence rate cannot be treated as equivalent to 32 points on a composite metric. In the basic formula, count each response once, even if the brand appears multiple times in the text.

## Why Track Visibility Score Beyond Google Rankings

### The data that challenges the old logic

There’s a common assumption among marketing and SEO teams: brands that rank well on Google also appear prominently in [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response). The data directly challenges this assumption.

Presence in organic search and AI responses needs to be tracked separately. Platforms may retrieve different sources and answer different questions. Strong SEO results don’t let you infer a brand’s mention rate across a set of [prompts](/en/resources/glossary/prompt), just as an [AI mention](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mention) doesn’t demonstrate a gain in traffic.

The most revealing data comes from an [Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-brand-visibility-correlations/) : the number of pages on a site has a correlation of just \~0.194 with AI visibility. This is a weak correlation in this sample; the study itself notes that correlation does not demonstrate causation. Producing a lot of content does not guarantee AI presence.

They’re different games, with different rules.

| Metric | What it measures | Where it applies | Correlation with AI visibility |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SEO Visibility Score | Estimated visibility in organic results by keyword | Google, Bing | Depends on the tool and the sample being compared |
| Domain Authority / DR | Authority via backlinks | Traditional SERPs | Varies: more relevant in AI Overviews, low in ChatGPT (0.266) |
| Traditional Share of Voice | Relative impressions in SERPs | SERPs | Low (SERP leaders may be invisible in AI) |
| **AI presence rate** | Responses that mention the brand | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews | Measures an event distinct from ranking and source citation |

### The problem of invisible discovery

There’s something that makes Visibility Score even more strategic: analytics can’t see it. It works like this: a user discovers your brand in a ChatGPT response. They don’t click anything, just read. Days later, they search for the brand name on Google. They go straight to the site. [Google Analytics](/en/resources/glossary/google-analytics) records this as “direct” or “branded search,” with no attribution to ChatGPT.

AI’s influence on the customer journey remains invisible.

Vercel documented exactly this: [an increase in searches for the brand name in Google Search Console correlated with more ChatGPT citations](https://vercel.com/blog/how-were-adapting-seo-for-llms-and-ai-search). AI generated interest, but another channel received the credit. The presence rate adds context to this influence, but it doesn’t attribute an individual visit or conversion to ChatGPT. Combine it with analytics, source surveys, and evidence from the customer journey.

## The Components of Visibility Score

The presence rate can be tracked alongside other metrics. Not all of them are part of the same score in every tool. Understanding each one helps you see exactly where your brand is falling short or succeeding.

### Mention frequency (Brand Visibility Score)

The most basic component: in how many relevant prompts did your brand appear? It is the foundation for all the other calculations. The analogy with ad impressions is useful: you existed and were seen, but that still says nothing about impact.

The [Surfer SEO](https://surferseo.com/blog/visibility-score/) calculates this component as (brand mentions / total responses analyzed). The number only makes sense in context: is it high or low compared with your competitors on those same queries?

### Position in the response

Appearing in the first line of a response is very different from appearing in a footnote list as “and other options include…”. Position matters.

The [AI Labs Audit](https://ailabsaudit.com/glossaire/es/visibility-score) uses a scale of 0 to 10: a score of 8 to 10 means the brand is mentioned as the 1st or 2nd option; 6 to 7 indicates a place in the top 3 to 5; 0 means absent. The earlier it appears in the response, the more likely users are to act on the mention.

### Type of mention

Not all mentions have the same value. The hierarchy, from most to least valuable, according to the [AI Labs Audit](https://ailabsaudit.com/glossaire/es/visibility-score) :

1. **Direct recommendation:** “Use [Brand], it’s the best option for…”
2. **Favorable comparison:** “[Brand] offers the best value for money compared with…”
3. **Source citation:** “According to [Brand]…”
4. **Simple mention:** “…among others, [Brand] also…”

A brand that frequently appears as a simple mention may have a high Visibility Score but little real influence on user decisions.

### Citation Rate – the difference between appearing and being cited

This is the distinction most professionals miss when they start measuring.

**Appearing in the response** means being mentioned by name. **Being cited as a source** means having a link or website referenced as the basis for the information the AI provides. A linked citation offers a path to visit the site, but the person may not click. The value of each event depends on the goal: reputation, recommendation, discovery, or traffic.

The formula: [Citation Rate](/en/resources/glossary/citation-rate) = (responses that cite a brand URL or domain as a source ÷ total responses analyzed) × 100. Don’t count a name mention without a reference as a source citation.

A [case documented by Omnia](https://www.useomnia.com/knowledge-base/ai-visibility-score) illustrates this well: a SaaS payroll company had a 30% Visibility Score (it appeared frequently), but only a 10% Citation Rate. A smaller competitor appeared less overall but was cited as a source almost every time because it published clear definitions and comparison tables that AI could easily extract.

### Breadth of coverage and consistency

**Breadth** is the number of different topics in your industry where the brand appears, not just obvious product queries. A CRM tool that only appears when someone asks “what’s the best CRM?” has low breadth. If it also appears in queries about sales productivity, customer onboarding, and pipeline management, its breadth is high.

**Consistency** asks whether the brand appears every time the same prompt is run, or whether results vary. Variation may reflect differences in generation, search, context, or available sources. By itself, it doesn’t prove a lack of information about the brand.

The [Omnia](https://www.useomnia.com/knowledge-base/ai-visibility-score) puts it well: a good Visibility Score is “prompt-weighted, not vanity-weighted.” Being cited for “best enterprise payroll software” may be more relevant to a business decision than appearing in generic questions, depending on the audience and offering.

### Sentiment – the component that can work against you

The only component that can be negative. A negative mention can be worse than not appearing at all.

The scale is simple: positive, neutral, or negative. But the impact is not symmetrical. A brand with a 30% Visibility Score where 60% of mentions are negative (complaints, unfavorable comparisons, warnings about limitations) is actively harming how AI perceives the brand.

Monitoring sentiment monthly, with a particular focus on comparison and evaluation prompts, is something few do—but it has a greater impact on a brand’s narrative in AI systems.

## Why measured visibility varies across AI platforms

There is no single logic. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and [Google AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) follow different patterns, and understanding each one changes what you should prioritize in your strategy.

The most interesting finding from the [Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-brand-visibility-correlations/) is this: AI Mode and AI Overviews had a correlation of 0.779 in brand mentions; the pairs involving ChatGPT had correlations of 0.749 and 0.769 in the analyzed sample. Those doing well on one tend to do well on the others. But the paths to get there are different.

| Platform | Correlation with YouTube | Correlation with DR | Correlation with web mentions | Main characteristic |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | Approximately 0.74 | 0,266 | 0,664 | Associations observed in the study, not algorithm weights |
| AI Mode (Google) | Approximately 0.74 | 0,285 | 0,709 | Branded anchors had a separate correlation of 0.628 |
| Google AI Overviews | Approximately 0.74 | 0,326 | 0,656 | DR had a higher correlation than the other two in this sample |

### ChatGPT – associations with YouTube and brand mentions

ChatGPT has a low correlation with classic Domain Rating (0.266). The study does not allow this association to be interpreted as the causal weight of [backlinks](/en/resources/glossary/backlink) in the algorithm. But it has a high correlation with YouTube mentions (\~0.737) and branded web mentions (0.66–0.71).

Why is YouTube associated with visibility? The Ahrefs study notes that videos and transcripts may be present both in the content consulted and in data used to develop models. This explanation is a hypothesis: correlation does not show that publishing videos by itself causes more citations or recommendations.

When using a vendor benchmark, compare the questions, execution conditions, and time period. A SaaS tool’s presence rate for software-related questions is not directly comparable to that of a publisher without knowing the queries’ intent. Individual examples do not allow you to infer the causal effect of a strategy.

### Perplexity – explicit citations with sources

Perplexity works differently: it is a [conversational search](/en/resources/glossary/conversational-search) engine with a [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) system. Before responding, it searches the web in real time and explicitly cites sources with links. This makes Citation Rate especially relevant here.

To appear consistently in Perplexity, content needs to be findable via search AND structured for extraction. Direct answers at the start of each section, concrete data, and a clear [heading hierarchy](/en/resources/glossary/headings-html-section-titles).

### Google AI Overviews – indexing, usefulness, and separate measures

In the Ahrefs study, the correlation between DR and mentions in AI Overviews was 0.326, higher than that observed for ChatGPT. DR is an Ahrefs metric, not an official Google score. Recency should be assessed according to the subject: update information that has actually changed, rather than applying a fixed two- or three-month deadline to every piece of content.

According to the [official Google documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; there is no special schema or requirement to rank in the top 10. [Structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data) should reflect the visible text. Text content, [internal links](/en/resources/glossary/internal-links), and SEO fundamentals remain relevant.

## How to measure your brand’s Visibility Score

### The manual prompt method

Any brand can measure its Visibility Score without a tool. The method takes time, but provides a real baseline.

**Step 1: Build a prompt matrix that represents your audience**

Adapt the five prompt categories from the [Hedgehog Digital Brasil](https://br.hedgehogdigital.co.uk/blog/presenca-marca-ias/) framework:

- **“The best”:** “best [solutions/products] for [customer profile]”
- **Comparison:** “[your brand] vs. [main competitor]”
- **Alternatives:** “alternatives to [competitor]”
- **Evaluation:** “is [your brand] good?” / “is [your brand] worth it?”
- **How to:** “how to choose [your category]”

There is no universal number of prompts that makes a measurement representative. Start with questions that cover relevant decisions and expand as you identify gaps. Separate open prompts from prompts that already include the brand: putting the name in the question prompts its presence and measures a different objective.

**Step 2: Run the prompts and record the results**

Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. For each response, record whether the brand appeared (yes/no), its position in the response, the type of mention, its sentiment, and whether a URL was cited.

**Step 3: Calculate**

Presence rate by platform = (responses with a mention / total responses analyzed) × 100. If you run each prompt multiple times, count the responses, record repetitions, and use the same criteria across periods.

**Step 4: Calculate the four main metrics**

1. Brand Visibility Score: % of appearances
2. Citation Rate: % of citations with a URL or source
3. [AI Share of Voice](/en/resources/glossary/ai-share-of-voice): % compared with competitors for the same queries
4. Sentiment: positive/neutral/negative distribution

Repeat monthly to track the trend. A single number tells you nothing. The curve over time is what matters.

### Tools to support the analysis

For those who need volume, scale, or continuous tracking:

| Tool mentioned | Use described in the article | User profile | Current pricing and coverage |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Tropk.ai](/en) | Analysis of questions, responses, and sources, and content auditing | Teams analyzing brand presence and website information | Visit the platform |
| Surfer AI Tracker | Tracking visibility in AI responses | SEO and content teams | Check with the vendor |
| Semrush AI Visibility | Analysis of AI presence | Marketing teams | Check with the vendor |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Brand monitoring in AI-powered search experiences | SEO teams | Check with the vendor |
| Profound | Analysis of AI responses, brands, and sources | Teams with broad operations | Check with the vendor |

The [Tropk.ai](/en) focuses on the Brazilian market and PT-BR. When evaluating a tool, confirm its language, country, platforms, data collection conditions, and methodology. International tools may also support prompts in Portuguese; a vendor’s name or origin does not demonstrate adequate coverage for your audience.

## What is a good Visibility Score

### Reference tiers 0–100

As an example of editorial ranges, the [DND SEO Services](https://dndseoservices.com/ai-visibility-score-explained/) presents its own scale. The tiers below are not universal benchmarks and should not be compared with scores calculated using another methodology:

| Score | Tier | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0-15 | Invisible | AI rarely or never mentions your brand | Build a foundation: schema, entity signals, core content with clear definitions |
| 16-30 | Minimal | Occasional and inconsistent mentions | Build a consistent presence: structured data + authoritative content |
| 31-50 | Growing | Moderate presence with gaps across platforms | Build cross-platform presence + optimize content for citability |
| 51-70 | Established | Solid foundation, with room to grow | Optimize citation prominence across all channels |
| 71-85 | Strong | Appears consistently in responses | Expand topical coverage and deepen expertise positioning |
| 86-100 | Dominant | Industry reference point in AI | Maintain with ongoing authority signals and content updates |

### Relative, not absolute, score

The table above is a reference, not a rule. A Visibility Score of 30% may be excellent if competitors appear in 5 to 10% of responses. Or it may be weak if the industry leader appears in 80%.

The logic is the same as Share of Voice: the number matters in relation to the market, not in absolute terms. What really matters is the trend. Is the score rising? Is it increasing or decreasing relative to competitors?

A useful benchmark compares brands across the same set of questions and using the same definition of presence. Comparisons across periods must also keep the platform, language, search conditions, and sample composition consistent. Without this information, an isolated percentage cannot establish market leadership.

## How to improve your Visibility Score

Five practical areas for improving the available information and investigating its relationship with visibility, without guaranteeing an increase in the score.

### Content structured for citability

The first sentence of each article section should work on its own. If AI extracts just that part, it should make sense. This is different from writing well: it is writing to be extracted.

A useful editorial structure is H2 for each major topic and H3 for each subtopic, preserving hierarchy and one main idea per paragraph. An [NVIDIA experiment](https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/finding-the-best-chunking-strategy-for-accurate-ai-responses/) found higher average accuracy with page-level splitting in [RAG](/en/resources/glossary/rag) systems tested on documents. Results varied by corpus and question. This test does not show that ChatGPT or Google extract every web article in the same way, nor does it establish a required paragraph length.

To learn how to apply this systematically, read about [GEO – Generative Engine Optimization](/en/blog/what-is-geo-generative-engine-optimization-complete-2026-guide) and [AEO – Answer Engine Optimization](/en/blog/what-is-aeo-answer-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide).

### Sourced data and statistics—the easiest difference to implement

Specific, sourced data helps support an answer and lets readers verify the information. This does not mean that adding a quota of statistics produces a fixed increase in citations on every platform. Prioritize data that is relevant, current, and correctly interpreted.

In practice: include statistics when they clarify a claim and link to the source. [Original research](/en/resources/glossary/original-research) can provide additional value when its methodology, sample, and limitations are presented. No number of figures per 300 words automatically turns content into a source chosen by AI.

### Presence in sources LLMs already trust

Citation reports, such as the [Profound study from August 2024 to June 2025](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/ai-platform-citation-patterns), show citations concentrated in certain sources, with differences across platforms. The denominator matters: a share among the ten most-cited sources is not a share of all citations. Investigate which publications and communities are relevant to your questions, without assuming that a mention on any major domain has a fixed value.

Practical strategy: identify which reference articles in your industry AI already cites frequently, and work to get mentioned in them. Digital PR applied to the AI context.

To understand the technical and strategic reasons brands do not appear in AI, read the article Why brands don't appear in AI.

### YouTube and off-site brand presence

This is the most counterintuitive finding in the research. The correlation between YouTube mentions and AI visibility is [\~0.737 across all platforms, according to the Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-brand-visibility-correlations/). Higher than the correlation with Domain Rating, and higher than the correlation with the number of backlinks.

This association does not prove that creating a channel or publishing a certain number of videos causes the result. Consider videos when they help your audience understand the topic, and keep verifiable information available in multiple formats. Track visibility to see whether there is a consistent change.

Branded web mentions (articles that mention the brand on other sites) have a correlation of 0.66 to 0.71 with AI visibility. Off-site presence, not just on your own site.

### Schema markup and freshness

[Schema markup](/en/resources/glossary/schema-org) can represent information and entities explicitly. The [official Google guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) requires markup to match visible content and states that no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Keep content accurate when facts, products, or sources change. Do not change the date to simulate an update, and do not add statistics just to meet a quota. A useful refresh improves information for the reader; its effect on mentions and citations needs to be observed.

## Visibility Score in Brazil

### How Brazilian brands are performing

For Brazilian brands, language, region, category, and purchase context need to be part of the question set. A result from an English-language sample or another country should not be treated as a diagnosis of the Brazilian market.

A vendor's public diagnostic may suggest areas to investigate, but it does not prove that a brand is absent from all assistants. Before using a score of zero or another benchmark, check which prompts, platforms, dates, and calculation rules produced the result.

This illustrates something worth repeating: human recognition is not the same as AI visibility. A brand known in Brazil with real organic traffic can have a zero AI visibility score. These are different systems.

There is no single benchmark that applies to all Brazilian industries. [Tropk.ai](/en) works with local context; tracking should start with a sample relevant to the business and a documented methodology. To broaden the context, read about the Brazilian [AI Search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search) market.

One final note on strategy: AI visibility does not replace SEO. It complements it. Google requires [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing) and eligibility for AI Overviews snippets; it does not require a specific Domain Rating or special schema. But a brand that performs well only on Google may be completely invisible on ChatGPT and Perplexity. AI Visibility Score is the metric that reveals this gap.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Visibility Score in AI responses?

Visibility Score is a term tools use to measure a brand's presence in AI responses. There is no universal formula. A basic measure is the mention rate: responses that mention the brand divided by the total responses analyzed, multiplied by 100. A composite score may include other criteria and should have its own documented methodology.

### How do you calculate a brand's presence rate in AI responses?

To calculate an AI presence rate, count how many responses in the analyzed set mention the brand at least once. Divide that number by the total responses and multiply by 100. If 32 of 100 responses mention the brand, the rate is 32%. Count each response once and record the platform, questions, repetitions, period, and execution conditions.

### What is the difference between Visibility Score and Citation Rate in AI?

A presence rate measures responses that mention the brand by name. Citation Rate measures responses that present a brand URL or domain as an identifiable source. AI may mention a company without citing its site, and may cite an article without recommending the product. A linked citation offers a path to a visit, but does not guarantee a click or conversion.

### Is AI Visibility Score equivalent to SEO Visibility Score?

AI Visibility Score and SEO Visibility Score measure different events. The SEO metric typically estimates page visibility in organic results for a set of keywords. AI presence rate counts responses that mention the brand in the questions analyzed. One number cannot be used to infer the other, and both should have a documented sample and methodology.

### What is a good Visibility Score for a brand?

A good Visibility Score depends on the category, questions, audience, platform, and methodology. No universal percentage proves leadership. Compare your brand with competitors in the same set of responses and observe the trend under equivalent conditions. Scores from vendors using different formulas should not be compared directly.

### Why does a brand's presence rate vary between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews?

A brand's presence rate may vary between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews because the platforms use different search experiences, models, sources, and contexts. The same question can also produce different responses across repeated runs. Calculate results by platform and keep conditions comparable; an aggregated score can hide absence or inaccurate descriptions in a specific assistant.
