If you’ve ever gotten lost among [GEO](/en/resources/glossary/geo), [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), [AEO](/en/blog/what-is-aeo-answer-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide) and half a dozen other acronyms, know that [59% of digital marketers use different terminology](https://www.emarketer.com/content/faq-on-geo-aeo--where-ai-search-seo-overlap-2026) to describe the same thing. Digiday put it more bluntly: [“there is no common taxonomy”](https://digiday.com/media/wtf-are-geo-and-aeo-and-how-they-differ-from-seo/). The confusion around GEO vs. SEO, [AEO](/en/resources/glossary/aeo), and everything else has become digital marketing’s biggest vocabulary problem in 2026.

In the [Seer Interactive sample](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/aio-impact-on-google-ctr-september-2025-update), covering 3,119 informational and educational queries, organic CTR for queries with [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) fell 61% between June 2024 and September 2025. In the third quarter of 2025, cited brands had 35% higher organic CTR than uncited brands. The change over time and the comparison between groups are different measures; neither indicates a universal effect. The gap between being cited and being ignored has never been wider. And each of these three acronyms addresses a different part of the problem.

Tropk’s position is clear: GEO, AEO, and SEO describe different layers of the same problem—search visibility—and the trend is toward convergence, not fragmentation. This article clarifies the confusion with data, shows where each discipline applies, and offers practical guidance. For a deeper dive into each, see our dedicated guides: [what GEO is](/en/blog/what-is-geo-generative-engine-optimization-complete-2026-guide), [what AEO is](/en/blog/what-is-aeo-answer-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide) and [what SEO is](/en/blog/what-is-seo-search-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide).

## Key points

- SEO supports discovery and organic presence; AEO organizes direct answers; GEO seeks presence in generative summaries.
- Definitions of AEO and GEO overlap and vary among providers; there is no universal taxonomy.
- A strong presence on Google can help with discovery, but does not guarantee retrieval or citation by AI assistants.
- Clear content, verifiable sources, and technical accessibility support all three areas.
- Compare rankings, answers, citations, and conversions using metrics and samples suited to each objective.

## Where each acronym comes from (and why the confusion exists)

SEO, GEO, and AEO emerged at different times, for different reasons, and with varying degrees of academic formalization. SEO has been an established practice since the 1990s. GEO was formalized in a [2023 Princeton paper](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2311.09735). AEO emerged as a market practice around 2019, without a founding paper. That difference in origins explains much of the confusion today.

### SEO has been around for 30 years

**SEO ([Search Engine Optimization](/en/blog/what-is-seo-search-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide))**) is the practice of optimizing pages and websites to appear in organic results on search engines such as Google and Bing. The discipline dates back to the 1990s, when the first search engines began organizing the web. Keywords, [backlinks](/en/resources/glossary/backlink), technical performance, user experience: all of these are part of SEO.

The original version of this article, from April 2026, cited [an 88.72% share of Google search in Brazil](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/brazil) according to StatCounter, without specifying the reporting month. The linked report is dynamic: check the period and methodology before using this figure as current data. This means that, for most Brazilian brands, SEO is still synonymous with being found. The discipline is mature, documented, and backed by 30 years of accumulated practice. The basics work. The problem is that the basics are no longer enough.

For a complete guide, read our post on [what SEO is](/en/blog/what-is-seo-search-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide).

### GEO originated in an academic paper in 2023

**GEO ([Generative Engine](/en/resources/glossary/generative-engine) Optimization)** is the practice of optimizing content to be cited in responses from [generative AI](/en/resources/glossary/generative-ai) systems such as [ChatGPT](/en/resources/glossary/chatgpt), [Gemini](/en/resources/glossary/gemini), [Perplexity](/en/resources/glossary/perplexity), and [Claude](/en/resources/glossary/claude). The term was formalized by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, Allen AI, and IIT Delhi in the paper [“GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2311.09735), presented at KDD 2024, one of the leading global data science conferences.

The study created GEO-bench, with 10,000 queries from different sources and domains. In the experimental setting, citing sources, adding statistics, and including quotations produced relative gains of about 30% to 40% in the [position-adjusted word count](/en/resources/glossary/position-adjusted-word-count) metric. [Keyword stuffing](/en/resources/glossary/keyword-stuffing) did not prove effective. Effects vary by method, metric, and domain; the results do not guarantee improvements in a current engine or on a specific site.

GEO has an academic reference with a public methodology and benchmark. This makes it possible to assess the experiment and its limitations, without turning a tested technique into a commercial guarantee.

### AEO emerged from market practice

**AEO ([Answer Engine](/en/resources/glossary/answer-engine) Optimization)** is the practice of optimizing content to be selected as a direct answer by answer engines, voice assistants, and AI systems. The concept was popularized by [Jason Barnard, CEO of Kalicube](https://kalicube.com/learning-spaces/faq-list/generative-ai/aio-geo-llmo-aeo-the-industry-keeps-renaming-the-methodology-jason-barnard-coined-in-2017/), starting in 2019, with a focus on featured snippets, position zero, and responses from assistants such as Alexa and Siri.

The [Similarweb defines AEO as the “answer-oriented subset of GEO”](https://www.similarweb.com/blog/marketing/geo/answer-engine-optimization/): GEO covers all [AI visibility](/en/resources/glossary/ai-visibility), while AEO focuses on being the selected answer. In Brazil, adoption of voice assistants [grew from 18% to 39%](https://ilumeo.com.br/marketing/estudo-assistentes-de-voz-e-oportunidades-para-marcas-2025/) (ILUMEO), making AEO increasingly relevant for brands looking to capture conversational searches.

Unlike GEO, AEO has no founding academic paper. It is a market practice that has evolved alongside the search interface. For the complete guide, read our post on [what AEO is](/en/blog/what-is-aeo-answer-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide).

### Why the confusion exists

The confusion is no accident. [59% of SEO influencers use different terminology](https://www.emarketer.com/content/faq-on-geo-aeo--where-ai-search-seo-overlap-2026) to describe AI optimization: some call it GEO, others AEO, GSO, [LLMO](/en/resources/glossary/llmo), or AIO (eMarketer, April 2026). [Digiday interviewed executives from GroupM and Raptive](https://digiday.com/media/wtf-are-geo-and-aeo-and-how-they-differ-from-seo/) and concluded that “there is no common taxonomy.”

Beyond the three main acronyms, others are used in the market: LLMO ([Large Language Model](/en/resources/glossary/llm) Optimization), AIO (AI Optimization), SXO (Search Experience Optimization), GSO (Generative Search Optimization), and even “agentic engine optimization” as a possible next frontier.

Tropk’s view: the proliferation of acronyms reflects a market trying to name a transformation that is still underway. The confusion is a symptom, not the disease. The solution is to understand what each practice addresses, not to memorize more acronyms.

## GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO: what each discipline addresses (and what it leaves out)

The three disciplines tackle different problems. The clearest way to understand them is through the [Machine Relations](https://machinerelations.ai/research/geo-vs-aeo-vs-seo) framework, which distinguishes each by the unit it optimizes, the result it produces, and how it fails.

### SEO addresses discovery

SEO optimizes pages to be crawled, indexed, and ranked. The primary unit is the page or website. The result is a ranking in **SERPs** (Search Engine Results Pages). The metrics are impressions, position, clicks, and organic traffic. The failure mode is simple: not discoverable.

SEO remains the infrastructure behind everything. An [AirOps analysis of 548,000 pages](https://www.airops.com/report/influence-of-retrieval-fanout-and-google-serps-in-chatgpt) found that, in the analyzed sample, pages in Google’s top position were cited 3.5 times more often by ChatGPT than pages outside the top 20. Technical accessibility and useful content support all three practices, but the study does not prove that only highly ranked pages can be cited. SEO alone, however, does not address the answer and [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) aspects.

### AEO addresses extraction

AEO optimizes content so that a fact or passage can be extracted as a direct answer. The primary unit is the fact, passage, or answer block. The result is direct extraction: a [**featured snippet**](/en/resources/glossary/featured-snippet) (the highlighted passage at the top of Google’s SERP), a voice assistant response, or position zero. The failure mode: content is indexed but cannot be extracted.

The context makes AEO urgent. [**Zero-click**](/en/resources/glossary/zero-click-search) searches end without a click on a result. The [2024 SparkToro and Datos study](https://sparktoro.com/blog/2024-zero-click-search-study-for-every-1000-us-google-searches-only-374-clicks-go-to-the-open-web-in-the-eu-its-360/) found nearly 60% in its US panel. The [forecast published by Gartner in 2024](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024-02-19-gartner-predicts-search-volume-will-drop-25-percent-by-2026) concerned a decline in traditional search volume, not an observed 25% share for chatbots. Content needs to be the answer, not just be on the list.

### GEO addresses citation

GEO optimizes for a source to be selected and cited within an AI-synthesized response. The primary unit is the source, [entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity), or claim. The result is selection and citation. The metrics are AI citations, share of citations, and recommendation presence. The failure mode: useful content that the answer engine ignores.

The data is sobering. [AirOps found that 85% of pages retrieved by ChatGPT are never cited](https://www.airops.com/report/influence-of-retrieval-fanout-and-google-serps-in-chatgpt) in the final answer. Being found does not guarantee being cited. And what matters for GEO differs from what matters for SEO: [brand mentions correlate more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks](https://machinerelations.ai/research/geo-vs-aeo-vs-seo), according to an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands. More concerning: [26% of the brands analyzed had zero mentions in AI Overviews](https://machinerelations.ai/research/geo-vs-aeo-vs-seo).

### Comparison table: SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO

| Criterion | SEO | AEO | GEO |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| What it optimizes | Page/site | Extractable fact/passage | Citable source/entity |
| Objective | Rank in the SERP | Be the direct answer | Be cited in the AI summary |
| Primary metric | Rankings, CTR, organic traffic | Snippet wins, zero-click visibility | AI citations, share of citation |
| Failure mode | Not discoverable | Indexed, not extractable | Useful, but ignored by AI |
| Platforms | Google, Bing | Google (snippets), voice assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Useful signals and practices | Relevant content, links, and technical accessibility | Answer clarity and evidence | Sources, entity presence, and verifiable information |
| Academic foundation | Established practice (30+ years) | Industry practice (\~2019, Jason Barnard) | Peer-reviewed paper (Princeton, KDD 2024) |

## Where they overlap and where they diverge

SEO, AEO, and GEO share technical fundamentals ([headings](/en/resources/glossary/headings-html-section-titles), schema, authority), but the data shows that the operational overlap between traditional search and AI citations is shrinking rapidly: from [70% to less than 20%](https://www.erlin.ai/blog/geo-vs-aeo), according to Erlin AI.

### The overlap is shrinking

A strong presence on Google can help with discovery, but does not guarantee citations. The degree of overlap varies by experience, query, method, and period; [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) data and data from other assistants are not interchangeable. [Erlin AI analyzed 500+ sites and concluded that the overlap between Google rankings and AI citations fell from 70% to less than 20%](https://www.erlin.ai/blog/geo-vs-aeo). Moz confirmed this with even more striking data: [88% of Google AI Mode citations do not match URLs appearing in the organic SERP](https://machinerelations.ai/research/geo-vs-aeo-vs-seo) (analysis of \~40,000 queries).

And there's more: [95% of the ChatGPT fan-out subqueries analyzed had zero volume in traditional tools](https://www.airops.com/report/influence-of-retrieval-fanout-and-google-serps-in-chatgpt) such as Google Keyword Planner or Semrush (AirOps, 548,000 pages). Traditional keyword tools may not record measurable demand for these subqueries; that does not mean they do not exist or that every AI query has zero volume.

The implication is clear: a page can rank well on Google and be completely invisible to ChatGPT and Perplexity. The rules of the game are becoming increasingly different.

### What works for all 3 at once

Despite operational differences, some practices help SEO, AEO, and GEO simultaneously. Clear headings help SEO (page structure), AEO (snippet extraction), and GEO (isolating citable blocks). [Schema markup](/en/blog/schema-markup-for-ai-visibility-the-7-types-that-matter-and-how-to-implement-each) describes entities and content; the markup should match the visible text. The [Google documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) does not require special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Freshness helps rankings, answer reliability, and citation eligibility.

But there's a limit. As [Machine Relations puts it](https://machinerelations.ai/research/geo-vs-aeo-vs-seo): “A page can be technically strong for SEO, structurally decent for AEO, and still fail at GEO because the brand has weak earned authority.” Earned authority—the perception of trustworthiness built outside a brand's own site—has become the differentiator between those who are cited and those who are ignored.

### Each AI engine makes decisions differently

It's not enough to optimize for “AI” in general. Each AI engine has its own selection criteria. [First Page Sage analyzed 11,128 commercial queries across 4 chatbots](https://firstpagesage.com/seo-blog/generative-engine-optimization-geo-explanation/) and documented marked differences: the company attributes 41% to authoritative lists in ChatGPT, 64% to lists in Perplexity, and 68% to traditional databases and directories in Claude. These are estimates based on First Page Sage's methodology, not official weights published by the engine developers. The source's updated version describes Claude web search; the percentage should not be interpreted as exclusive use of static databases.

This means the same brand can be cited by Perplexity and ignored by Claude. GEO is not a single discipline: it is a practice that needs to be adapted for each engine. For a detailed analysis of each engine's algorithm, see our [complete GEO guide](/en/blog/what-is-geo-generative-engine-optimization-complete-2026-guide).

## Different metrics for different problems

Each discipline needs its own metrics. Using SEO metrics to measure GEO is like measuring temperature with a ruler: it's the wrong instrument.

| Discipline | Traditional metrics | New metrics (2026) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SEO | Rankings, CTR, organic traffic, Core Web Vitals | Still valid + integration with AI metrics |
| AEO | Featured snippet rate, zero-click visibility | AI Answer Inclusion Rate ([Venator PM](https://www.venatorpm.com/measuring-success-ai-search-seo-aeo-geo-metrics)\n) |
| GEO | Didn't exist before | AI share of voice, algorithmic share of mind, mention frequency, competitors cited alongside ([Rodolfo Sabino](https://rodolfosabino.com/metricas-de-seo-e-geo-em-2026/)\n) |

[GA4](/en/resources/glossary/google-analytics) helps analyze identifiable visits and conversions, while [Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in Web performance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features#performance). These reports do not replace separate tracking of questions, brands, and sources cited across different assistants. Tools such as [Tropk.ai](/en) exist to fill this gap by bringing together questions, answers, and sources to analyze brand presence and guide content audits. Confirm the platforms and conditions available under your contracted scope.

And for anyone working in GEO, here's a figure worth remembering: [40–60% of cited sources change monthly](https://www.emarketer.com/content/faq-on-geo-aeo--where-ai-search-seo-overlap-2026) in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT (eMarketer). Volatility is much higher than in organic rankings. The position you have today may disappear tomorrow.

## Tropk's view: convergence, not fragmentation

### The three terms describe layers of the same problem

The real problem is search visibility. SEO addresses the discovery layer: being found. AEO addresses the extraction layer: being the answer. GEO addresses the citation layer: being the source AI chooses to mention.

The confusion comes from treating these three practices as competing disciplines, when in practice they are complementary layers. Tropk's framework: SEO is the foundation, AEO is the [answer layer](/en/resources/glossary/answer-layer), and GEO is the citation layer. All three serve the same purpose: to be found, selected, and recommended. Treating them as an either-or choice is the costliest mistake a marketer can make right now.

### What this means for Brazil

Google has a strong share of Brazilian search, according to [StatCounter](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/brazil); choose a documented period to assess the current figure. SEO remains the foundation of any organic visibility strategy in the country.

But Brazil is the [3rd-largest country in the world by ChatGPT users](https://intelexia.com.br/chatgpt-no-brasil-top-3-em-uso-e-como-impulsionar-sua-empresa/), with approximately 140 million interactions per day. Voice assistant usage [jumped from 18% to 39%](https://ilumeo.com.br/marketing/estudo-assistentes-de-voz-e-oportunidades-para-marcas-2025/) (ILUMEO). Brazilians are changing the way they search faster than most brands realize.

Brazilian marketers need to work across all three disciplines. Priorities depend on a company's stage, type of business, and the channels its audience uses. Ignoring [GEO and AEO](/en/resources/geo-and-aeo-guide) and assuming SEO alone will do the job is no longer an option.

## What to do in practice

### If you're already doing SEO well

SEO is a prerequisite, not a destination. If your SEO is already working well, the next step is to add the two complementary layers.

To add AEO and GEO to your existing SEO, follow these initial steps:

1. Structure each section as a question-and-answer pair, with a direct answer in the first 2 sentences
2. Include an FAQ with real questions and self-contained answers. Use [FAQPage](https://schema.org/FAQPage) to describe visible content, without promising a snippet: [Google ended FAQ rich results in May 2026](https://developers.google.com/search/updates#deprecating-the-faq-rich-result-feature)
3. Include data when it helps answer the question and has a source, period, and context; there is no universal quota for statistics per section
4. Define each technical term at first mention with a concise sentence
5. Create comparison tables when the content involves alternatives or comparisons
6. Keep content up to date, [40-60% of sources cited by AI change monthly](https://www.emarketer.com/content/faq-on-geo-aeo--where-ai-search-seo-overlap-2026)

7. Monitor your presence in AI answers with tools such as [Tropk.ai](/en)

Direct, self-contained answers, explicit sources, and well-defined terms help with reading and [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval). Also assess usefulness, access, and accuracy; this format does not certify that content will be selected by answer engines.

### Prioritization framework by business type

The priority among SEO, AEO, and GEO changes according to business type. This table proposes an editorial order for discussing investment by context; validate the priority against the company's audience, gaps, and data:

| Business type | Priority 1 | Priority 2 | Priority 3 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| E-commerce | SEO (product discovery) | AEO (product answers) | GEO (citation in AI comparisons) |
| B2B SaaS | GEO (being cited as a solution) | SEO (inbound) | AEO (technical answers) |
| Media/content | AEO (being the cited source) | GEO (presence in AI summaries) | SEO (baseline traffic) |
| Local services | SEO (Local Pack, Maps) | AEO (voice assistants) | GEO (AI recommendations) |
| Education | GEO (being a reference) | AEO (course answers) | SEO (discovery) |

To learn more about each discipline, see our guides: [GEO](/en/blog/what-is-geo-generative-engine-optimization-complete-2026-guide), [AEO](/en/blog/what-is-aeo-answer-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide) and [SEO](/en/blog/what-is-seo-search-engine-optimization-the-complete-guide).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, improves the discovery and organic presence of pages in search engines. AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, organizes content for direct answers. GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, seeks to improve the presence of sources and brands in AI-synthesized answers. The practices share fundamentals and can be combined, with different metrics for each objective.

### Is AEO the same practice as GEO?

AEO and GEO overlap, but the terms vary in usage among providers. One useful distinction is to treat AEO as the work of organizing direct answers and GEO as the work of building presence in generative answers, including retrieval, brand description, and citation. This is an editorial distinction, not a universal hierarchy adopted by all engines.

### Will GEO and AEO replace SEO?

GEO and AEO complement SEO. Organic search continues to help people and systems find pages, while AI answers add new ways to discover and select sources. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google maintains its SEO fundamentals. The priority for each area should reflect the company's audience, questions, and gaps.

### Why might a page rank on Google but not be cited by AI?

Ranking on Google and being cited in an AI answer are different outcomes. An assistant may expand the question into related searches, retrieve several pages, and use only some sources in its synthesis. A page may rank well and still not answer the specific question needed. Investigate the question, relevant passage, accuracy, and technical accessibility.

### What content practices help SEO, AEO, and GEO at the same time?

Practices useful for SEO, AEO, and GEO include public access, internal links, clear answers, defined terms, up-to-date information, and verifiable sources. Lists and tables should serve the topic. Structured data should describe visible content; Google does not require special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and markup does not guarantee selection.

### How can you measure GEO results beyond organic traffic?

To measure GEO, track brand mentions, cited sources, recommendation context, and presence relative to competitors across a documented set of questions. Record the engine, language, period, and collection method. Track identified visits and conversions separately. Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in Web performance, but does not replace a cross-assistant citation dashboard.
